WINGS AND WORDS

AVIATION BOOKS AND COMICS FESTIVAL

Prestwick Airport Terminal Building
The Aviator Suite & The London Lounge
7 - 8 September 2013

There is a massive amount of literature on the subject of aviation,                  both fiction and non-fiction, and a good number of Ayrshire writers. Wings and Words brought together local authors and those from further afield in a programme ranging over the whole genre.

Of the four Ayrshire writers, Dougal McIntyre spoke with Lord Selkirk on the first flight over Everest by their respective fathers, and with Ann Galbraith on the past and future of Prestwick Airport; Quentin Wilson on the development of the hovercraft on the Clyde; and Gordon McVie on the Scottish Space School.

From the rest of Scotland came Dugald Cameron on the photographs of Wilf White; Kenny Kemp on the future of air travel; James Robertson on his new novel based on the Lockerbie bombing alongside Jim Swire, whose daughter died in the crash; Lord Selkirk on Rudolf Hess; Iain Hutchison on Scotland’s Air Ambulance, George Kerevan on the Luftwaffe and Charles Mac Kay on Beardmore’s.

And the Festival brought from south of the Border Leo McInstry to speak about the Dam Busters and the Hurricane; Derek Robinson  to look back on the writing and filming of A Piece of Cake; James Humphreys to explain why the time is right to reissue Captain W.E. Johns’ books about Worrals, the female counterpart of Biggles; and Arthur Ward, the world expert on Airfix.

Events took place at Prestwick Airport in the Aviator Suite and the London Lounge. Since the Static Aircraft Display was scheduled for the same period, it was eventually decided to charge for a day ticket for both, which worked well. The writers were intrigued to be invited to a specialist book festival actually held in an airport, and many of them volunteered to come again in the future.
